Afghanistan & The North-West Frontier
The volatile politics of the mountainous North-West Frontier was a constant source of trouble for the British and became the scene for some of the Gordons’ most famous and heroic actions.
In 1879, the 92nd fought in the Second Afghan War, taking part in the epic 23-day march from Kabul to Kandahar. In 1897, the 1st Battalion of the newly-enlarged Gordon Highlanders achieved enormous fame when it stormed the Heights of Dargai. During this period four Victoria Crosses were awarded.
