August 6 1945, 8.15 a.m. the first atomic bomb used in warfare, codenamed 'Little Boy', was dropped on Hiroshima, resulting in the death of 70,000 people. Three days later, on August 9, a second bomb, codenamed 'Fat Man' was dropped on Nagasaki, leading to a Japanese surrender on August 15, marking the end of the war. This insightful program, made to coincide with the 60th Anniversary of VJ-Day, charts the events that led to the end of the war.

The ultimately tragic spy, Mata Hari, was the archetypal "femme fatale", and the nun-like Florence Nightingale, the selfless field nurse. From Bannockburn to Flanders Field, from Flodden to Culloden Moor, the Scottish fighting man has won a formidable reputation, sustained by a fierce pride in his country and its traditions.

Africa was a vital source of trade and materials for the rapidly expanding industrial Britain and so the famous redcoat armies fought through the endless jungles, swamps and deserts of the vast continent. Through these harsh conditions, soldiers campaigned on expeditions from the Asanti and Zulu Wars to the Boer War.

The saga of the Jacobite rebellions is a moving tale of hope, courage and tragedy, for destiny decreed that on the windswept moor of Culloden in April 1746, Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Young Pretender, would gamble and lose all. It was here that proud Highland clans would make their final fateful charge, and that the Jacobite cause would be lost forever. It features superb battle re-enactments, dramatised reconstructions and "eye-witness" accounts, as well as expert commentary and analysis.
