When is the Museum open?
  • The Museum is open Tuesday – Saturday
  • Opening Times: 10.00 – 16.30 (last entry 15.00)
What facilities are open?


The Grant Room, Armoury, Silver Room, temporary exhibition ‘Bens, Glens and Heroes’ and Regimental Dining Room will be open to view via a one-way route.


Our new look café will be open for sit-in dining and will have additional outdoor seating so you can relax in the fresh air, enjoying the scenery in our south-facing Victorian Walled Garden. We will also have ‘grab-and-go’ drinks and snacks to take away.


The Shop will be open and you are welcome to browse. We accept cash and card payments. You can also visit our online shop.

Toilets and changing facilities

Accessible toilets are available on all floors. Baby change facilities are available on the top floor.


The Museum gardens and outdoor dining area will be open.


Our lift is available for visitors with limited or restricted mobility.

How do I book my visit to the Museum?

You can book online before arriving at the Museum, choosing a date and approximate time slot for your visit. Click here to book. Please bring your ticket with you on the day. You can also pay for your ticket on the day of your visit at the Welcome Desk on arrival.

You do not need to book to visit the Café.

Will you ask for my contact details when booking?

Yes, we will ask for your name and a telephone number or email address for those using our audio guide handsets. Your contact details will be held securely for 21 days only and then will be securely disposed of.

Do I need to arrive at the start of my time slot?

No, you do not need to arrive at the start of your allotted time, but we would recommend that you make sure and leave yourself enough time to enjoy your visit to the galleries (last entry at 15.00).

Do I need to print my ticket?

You are welcome to bring a printed copy of your ticket or you can show it on a phone or tablet device to a museum representative if you don’t have a hard copy to hand.

How long will a visit take?

We estimate a self-guided tour will take an hour and a half; a volunteer guided tour can take up to two hours.

Can I visit the Gardens if I don’t have a ticket for the Museum?

Yes, you are welcome to take a stroll of our gardens and café at any time during opening hours.

Can I book a group visit?

Requests to visit with a group will be accommodated where possible. For more information on group visits click here or contact [email protected]

Do you take bookings for regimental dinners or conferences?

We are happy to receive enquiries for regimental dinners, conferences and other events. Please contact [email protected] for further information.

Will I need to wear gloves and/or a mask when I visit?

You can wear a mask or gloves during your visit if you would like to. Please note that you will not be able to dispose of any of your personal protective equipment worn during your visit in the rubbish bins at the Museum; you will need to take them home with you.

Can I go around by myself, or will I need a Guided Tour?

If you would prefer, you can take a self-guided tour using our audio guide handsets, available in nine different languages. We will be offering guided tours of the Museum in addition and these are available by request at the Welcome Desk. Please note, the WW1 replica trench is only available to visit with a Guide.

Can I give a donation and where can I do this?

Yes, donations are always very much appreciated. You can donate online here or onsite at the donation boxes posted throughout the site.

Do you have WiFi?

Yes we have free WiFi. Select the “GH Museum WiFi” network.

What will happen when I arrive?

You will be greeted by a Museum representative and asked to check in at the Admissions Desk so that we can confirm your booking and provide you with any information you might need to assist you with your visit. We will then issue you with your audio guide device or introduce you to your personal Guide who will then begin your tour. You can enjoy a refreshment at the café (Cognito at the Museum) after your tour and are welcome to take in a stroll of our gardens if you like.

Will there be someone to ask if I have questions?

Yes, Museum Staff and Volunteers will be on hand to guide you and to answer any questions you may have during your visit. They will all be wearing Museum name badges.

Can I book a school visit?

We are unable to host on-site workshops at present, but you can hire our WW1 and WW2 Artefact Loan Boxes to help bring the history of The Gordon Highlanders to life in your classrooms.

I have additional access needs. Can I still visit the Museum?

Wheelchair access into the Museum is possible via the ramps, and within the building there are ramps and a lift to ensure all visitors can get around easily. A wheelchair is available to Visitors on request from Reception and it will be sanitised after every use. If you would like to inform us of your visit in advance, please email [email protected]

How can I get to the Museum?

Getting to The Gordon Highlanders Museum couldn’t be easier. There is free car parking at the Museum and further parking nearby at Johnston Gardens. The Museum has cycle racks located at the front of the building. If you rely on public transport, you can take the 11 or X17 buses from Union St, Aberdeen. Please consider the current government guidance before making your journey.

What should I do if I feel unwell or have to self-isolate on the day of my visit?
